Illustration Friday theme: Totem
This is my entry for the Illustration Friday theme, Totem. Totem is defined as a natural object or animal believed by a society to have spiritual significance, and adopted by it as an emblem. I chose to revisit this earlier work for two reasons: one, it fit well with the theme of totem; and two, I felt that much more could be done with it (much like a song that is remixed, or extended). Crane mythology has a long history in many cultures (but particularly in Asia) as symbolic of happiness and eternal youth. In Japan, the crane is one of the mystical or holy creatures, and symbolizes good fortune and longevity, because of its fabled lifespan of a thousand years. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane. After WWII, the crane came to symbolize peace and the innocent victims of war.
