Illustration Friday Theme: Teacher

if teacher This is my posting for the Illustration Friday theme, Teacher. Hypatia of Alexandria was a Greek mathematician and philosopher in Roman Egypt. Around 400 AD she became head of the famed Platonist school where she taught mathematics, philosophy, & astronomy. She was also the last librarian of the Library of Alexandria (considered the largest and most significant library of the ancient world). Both she, and the library fell victim to the violence and upheaval of that time. She is played by Rachel Weisz, in the 2009 film, "Agora". In 415 AD she was denounced as a witch, then subjected to a gruesome death at the hands of an angry mob. She later came to be seen as a secular "patron saint" of science and libraries. In this image she is holding two planispheric astrolabes (an astronomy tool of the ancient world). Scientific advances of the Renaissance, and Enlightenment were built on the re-discovered knowledge of the Classical world.

  1. Oh, I think that somehow, violence and upheaval to culture still exists today
perhaps, in other ways, but there is some rejection of those who think.
    excellent work as always, Allison!
